According to the official TM website, it is an "effortless technique of recharging your mind and body -- creating a brighter, more positive state of mind." There are TONS of evidence-based research that supports the benefits of TM: relief from stress and anxiety, enhanced brain function, and a healthier heart.
TM incorporates mantras and affirmations to induce a state of relaxation. It can be done silently or out loud and alone or with a group. TM is different than your usual guided meditation. In TM, cues like "empty the mind" or "visualize happiness and abundance" aren't necessary. Especially if you don't practice meditation often, it can be difficult. However, please keep in mind, that there isn't a wrong way to meditate.
While TM can be done silently, I find it most powerful when it's done out loud and with a group. *Traditionally, TM is a silent meditation of your own assigned mantra. Audible mantra meditation allows you to connect the vibration from your vocal cords to the collective vibration all around you. With time, it can even influence the spirit within (if you believe in that sort of thing). The power of sound is real!
