Pleasure is an experience - an experience of being satisfied and content. I spoke with a tantra educator in the community and she talked about tantra in terms of pleasure. She talked about pleasure on a 1 to 10 scale. If we think about pleasure, what number do you think most people strive for? People tend to go for the release, the ejaculation, the best and most intense experience - so, the 10.
To go into this further, it's usually not gradual. People go from 3 to 10 or even, 1 to 10. But what about the rest of the scale? The 2, 3, 4, 5... What do you think is the best place to be in terms of the scale? It's definitely not the 1 and it's not the 10. It's the 9, 9.8, 9.9 -- the peak. Tantra is learning how to experience the 9.9's and to sustain the peak. That's why you hear about the multiple orgasms experience or the ability to sexually perform for hours. That's because those individuals learned how to sustain their peak. But remember, tantra isn't just about intercourse.
As a budding tantra educator, I come across many misconceptions of what tantra is as a whole. For those that believe the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, sex is just ONE part of tantra. Tantra is about learning how to appreciate the 1's, 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's... the whole scale, so you can experience new pleasures that either have been overlooked or unappreciated. This new form of pleasure can be experienced in a variety of contexts. Pleasure can be experienced by the way you taste your food, how you listen to a beautiful piece of music and even what you find humorous ~ tantra can be applied in the most innocent pleasures.
