A gentleman left this comment on my business Facebook page, "In the physical sense, the human mind protects the body at all costs. Hold you hand over the flame and the mind will instantly tell the body to pull away. Why is it when it comes to spirituality the mind holds the mind over the flame? Why does the mind punish itself in light of the flame? Shouldn't the mind pull away from suffering? Why doesn't the mind apply the same rules to the spiritual as it does to the physical?"
Ok, so first thing I thought was, "woah... deep stuff... right up my alley." It took me a couple rereads and hours to come up with my reply:
The physical body has a pain threshold, so if you apply that same concept to the spiritual body... you could say the spiritual body also has a threshold for pain and suffering. However unlike physicality, spirituality is infinitely intertwined with subtle forces that many times go beyond our own understanding. The physical body is limited while the spiritual body/mind is limitless. With that being said, the mind isn't bound by the adaptations we have with physical pain. I wouldn't say the mind punishes itself in light of the flame or suffering we experience in life. I would say that the suffering we experience are lessons (whether it's considered as such or not), so that we can develop the resiliency to experience joy and happiness in light of pain and suffering.
Pain and happiness are two sides of the same coin. To open yourself up to happiness, you also have to open yourself up to the potential of pain which is scary, but worthwhile to the human experience.
